Every day, Kael dragged his plain bone comb through coppery sand, gathering loose glow-threads for the forge reef’s bell ropes; the comb looked worthless, but its teeth were cut from the first tool he had ever shaped himself. Until one day, the east current arrived roaring green and loud as torn silk, snapping the ropes and flinging sparks of plankton into the dark.
Because of that, Kael lashed shells, spiral wire, and bead-chain onto the comb with stinging-fiber cord. Because of that, the little tool became a storm comb, humming hot against his tendrils as he raced into the surge. Finally, he drew it once through the wild water, and every strand he had made by hand caught, pulled, and braided the current into bright, obedient lines. By dawn, the reef bells rang from ropes Kael had rebuilt himself, and his plain bone comb glittered with coppery sand.
