Every evening, Vera tightened the copper wires in the winter conservatory while snow ticked against the glass roof and the potted fir breathed its clean, resin scent. She had just invented Star-Path Dash: start at the lowest ornament, trace only matching patterns, and reach the top before the furnace bell rang. Until one night, a gust slapped the panes, the lamps snapped dark, and the bell clanged early.
Because of that, Vera raced by touch, fingers skimming scallops, leaves, spirals, and one slippery ribbon of raised ink. Because of that, the other caretakers followed her calls through the black aisles—“Paisley left! Checker drop! Curl and climb!”—until their boots found the hidden breaker box beneath the tree stand.
Finally, light burst upward, flashing through the star like a signal flag. Vera laughed, breathless, among the warm needles and bright glass, exactly where her game had always meant to bring her: home.
