🎨 How to color it

Layer the hedgehog’s face in soft taupe, the leafy quills in olive and sage, the tiny stars in muted gold, and the mushroom cap in warm chestnut. Use sharp colored pencils for the vines, leaves, and star pockets, working from the outer quill tips inward so your hand doesn’t smudge the tight curls. Try a subtle night-fade across the quill mass—deep blue-violet near the top spines, easing into green around the central leaves.

Every evening, Tavish set one small challenge: count the curling lines that silvered his quills before the mushroom caps closed. He began at the leftmost spine, where the air smelled of damp fern and peppery earth, and whispered each spiral like a bead sliding along thread. Until one night, a star-shaped fleck appeared between two leaves where no star had been before.

Because of that, he started again. Because of that, the count kept changing—seventeen, twenty-three, then none at all as the curls seemed to breathe with the soft pop of spores under the mushroom’s rim. Curiosity carried him past caution, past the fern’s combed shadow, until finally he stopped counting and listened. The sky-vines were not numbers; they were a map of where wonder had touched him. At dawn, Tavish began at the leftmost spine again.
