Under the fern hill, Juno rubbed a walnut-sized knob between her claws until it shone. It was only a little heart cut from fallen cedar, but don’t tell anyone: she planned to put it on her den door before moonrise, so every friend would know her home was made by her own claws.
The trouble was the cedar drank up paint like thirsty moss. Juno padded out through the mushroom grove to find snail-gloss, the clear varnish that dried hard as raindrops. The path smelled of damp bark and peppery toadstools. At the tallest striped mushroom, a beetle-keeper asked for payment: one curl of warm dragon smoke to dry his spotted caps. Juno gave it, though it left her throat scratchy and her lantern-breath no brighter than a firefly.
Back home, she brushed the snail-gloss over the heart. It caught the light, gold and green, and suddenly the knob looked less like a knob and more like a promise. Juno fixed it to her door, then carved two tiny leaves around it with a proud, careful scrape-scrape.
