Under the striped roof, Pippa counted the twinkles in the brass music box. She wanted to stop right beside it, where the tune sounded warmest: plink-plink, hum-hum. But each time the carousel slowed, her pole carried her past the music and back to the same painted star on the floor.
One quiet evening, a tiny cricket hopped onto her saddle tassel. “I’m lost,” he chirped, smelling of dust and peppermint sugar. “My song belongs near the star with the soft echo.” Pippa listened. When the music box wound down, her hooves paused exactly over her old star, and the cricket sang one silver note that fit the hollow beneath her like a key.
From then on, carousel horses kept their own places so every little song could find home again. Next time you see Pippa by her star, can you almost hear plink-plink, hum-hum?
