🎨 How to color it

Color the horse chestnut brown, the wooden trough and fence honey tan, the barn roof brick red, and the far hills soft green. Use chunky crayons or broad markers for the horse’s big body and the wide trough boards, and don’t worry if little hands color past the bold lines. Add a pale blue shimmer around the water ripples so the horse’s secret drink looks a little mysterious.

Under the shady pasture rail, Ketta tapped one hoof: tap, pause, tap-tap. She had invented Ripple-Secret, a game where every pattern meant a surprise. But the trough across the paddock answered with a soft glug, as if it knew a better one. Ketta wanted that sound for her game, so she stepped away from the cool rail into tickly grass and warm dust.

Halfway there, burrs grabbed her tail like tiny hooks. She shook and shook, losing three shiny tail hairs to the weeds. At the trough, Ketta dipped her nose. The water rang plip-plop, and the ripples spelled a wobbly heart. “I found the secret!” she whinnied. She carried the pattern back in hoof taps, and soon every sparrow on the fence tapped along. When you see the trough, can you guess the joy hiding in that first tap, pause, tap-tap?
