🎨 How to color it

Color the axolotl soft coral pink, its feathery gills raspberry, the bubbles pale aqua, and the sea plants two lively greens. Use sharp colored pencils for the many gill fronds and plant ribbons, then switch to smooth marker fills on the round belly and big tail. Try a sunny yellow glow behind the tiny smiling worm so the axolotl’s shared excitement feels extra bright.

Every day before breakfast, Quilla tapped her little shell button on the pebble springs: tikka-tak, tikka-tak! The button looked plain, but it had been her first drum, polished smooth by a hundred secret songs. She wanted to play the loudest welcome at the Bubble Fair, where water smelled like mintweed and the stones hummed underfoot.

Until one day, a mudslide rolled down with a gloopy thump and stuffed the bubble vents shut. Because of that, the fair went quiet. Because of that, the lantern minnows began drifting home, their silver tails dimming. Quilla pressed the button to her chest, then shouted, “Follow my beat!” She drummed so fast the pebbles jumped. A striped worm popped from the silt, grinning, and wiggled the same rhythm into the clogged vents.

At last, bubbles burst upward in fizzy crowds, carrying Quilla’s beat from plant to plant. She didn’t play the welcome alone; she passed the rhythm to fins, feelers, tails, and one proud worm. If you spot that tiny grin beside her, can you hear tikka-tak, tikka-tak?
