Under the winter reef’s bright surface, Galen lined up beside the coral arch and clicked, “Seven bubbles, no bumps.” He wanted to glide from the waving kelp to the shell-trimmed sea tree in one swoop, neat as a ribbon. The water tasted chilly and clean, and little round bubbles drifted past his nose with soft plip, plip sounds. He tucked his fins close, took one brave breath, and shot forward.
Past the first bubble, he rolled. Past the second, he dipped under a dangling ornament that spun like a tiny moon. Fish flashed silver around him, and snowflake shapes swayed on strings from the reef ledge. Galen’s heart thumped faster at bubble five, where the current curled into a twisty blue loop. He grinned anyway and slipped through it, tail flicking quick-quick-quick.
At the seventh bubble, he heard a clear little jing! Then another answered from the ornament below: jing-jing! The bubbles were not obstacles at all; they were notes from the sea tree, waiting for someone bold enough to swim the tune. Galen circled back, laughing bubbles of his own, and the whole reef rang softly with plip, jing, swish. Next time you spot his fluffy hat, can you trace the seven-bubble song from waving kelp to sea tree?
