🎨 How to color it

Color the dolphin sea-glass blue, the heart bubbles coral pink and cherry red, the seaweed emerald green, and the sandy floor warm beige. Use sharp colored pencils around the many small hearts and coral branches, then switch to smooth marker fills for the dolphin’s broad body. Try fading the background from pale aqua at the top to deeper turquoise near the shell so the pink hearts seem to float forward.

Before moonrise, a young dolphin named Nessa circled Heart Reef with her ear tilted toward the sand. She wanted to hear the silent bell that old currents promised would ring only for the most patient listener. Click-click, she called softly, but the coral gave back only tickly pops, and the seaweed brushed her side like wet ribbons.

For seven slow tides, Nessa waited beside a closed scallop no one bothered to open. Bigger dolphins chased silver fish above her. Crabs tapped stones nearby. At last, a tiny thrum rose from under the shell: hum-hum, hush-hum. “There you are,” Nessa whispered.

When she nudged the scallop, a hidden pocket of bubbles slipped out, each one shaped like a heart and glowing faint rose in the blue. The bubbles climbed past coral, past weeds, past Nessa’s smiling nose, and the reef rang without sound. Ever since, dolphins carry heart bubbles from Heart Reef when they want patience to be seen; next time you spot those hearts around Nessa, can you guess which shell kept the secret?
