🎨 How to color it

Color the brick fireplace warm red-brown, the pine wreath and garland deep forest green, the stockings cranberry and cream, and the window night sky navy blue. Use sharp colored pencils for the wreath ornaments, stocking patterns, and brick lines, then switch to broader strokes for the armchairs and rug. Try making the fire glow from pale yellow in the center to orange at the edges so the stockings look warmed by it.

Every evening in December, after the last log sighed and popped, Max placed a thumb-sized red tile on the hearthstone. It looked like a broken bit of chimney, but his father had sent it home from the northern rail line with one note: Hold it near a patient fire. Max wanted to know why. Night after night, while pine needles scented the room and the window filled with snow, the tile stayed dull as toast crust.

Until one night, the fire burned lower than usual, blue at the roots and whispering instead of crackling. Because of that, Max did not hurry upstairs when Sarah and Chloe called. Because of THAT, he heard the tile give a tiny tick, like a beetle tapping glass. Warm gold lines crept across it, spelling: THIRD STOCKING, BACK SEAM.

Max’s fingers shook as he found the hidden stitches. Inside waited a folded train ticket, stamped for Christmas Eve, and one penciled line: Meet me at first bell. He sat very still, the room bright with garland and flame, and let the waiting end slowly. If you spot the stocking with his name, you’ll know where the patient fire finally answered.
