Under the old gym lights, Nico shook his tiny bottle-cap rattle: clink-clink, clink-clink. He wanted everyone to hear the cheer his sister had made before she moved away, but the big room swallowed it. The ball boomed over the net, shoes squeaked, and Nico’s small sound hid in his fist.
Then his rattle slipped. Caps skittered under the bench, tapping three water bottles: tink, tonk, ting! The gym answered from high in the corner, clink-clink, clink-clink, louder and brighter. “It knows it!” Nico whispered. He set the bottles by the net, and each serve made them sing the cheer for everyone. Ever since, players leave bottles near volleyball nets in that gym, so big joy has somewhere to ring; can you spot the little singers waiting after the clink-clink?
