Between the pine trunks, Nico wrapped both hands around his warm tin cup and began his July challenge: count every star before the cocoa stopped steaming. Lila tapped a pencil on the log like a tiny drum. “No skipping the small ones,” she said. The fire popped pine-sappy sparks, the tent flap rustled, and Nico whispered numbers so fast they tangled with the cricket chirps.
He counted the spoon-shaped group, the crooked kite, the dot by the moon, and three stars that might have been bugs. The cocoa smelled like cinnamon and smoke. Then the smoke rose in a wiggly ribbon, curled left, curled right, and drew a brand-new star made of gray air. Lila gasped into her mug. Nico frowned. “That’s not fair. The sky is cheating.”
But the smoke-star drifted apart and became a question mark, then a curly mustache, then something very much like a raccoon wearing a crown. Nico forgot his number completely. He started naming what the smoke invented, and Lila kept score with giggles instead of marks. By the time the cocoa cooled, curiosity had run clear past counting; next time you see that campfire curl, check whether Nico’s royal raccoon is sneaking back between the pine trunks.
