🎨 How to color it

Layer sunflower gold on the sun face and long rays, coral pink and rind green on the watermelon wedges, and pearly peach on the scallop shells. Use sharp pencils for the tiny dots, leaf veins, and crosshatched triangles, coloring each repeated section before moving clockwise to the next. Try a pale aqua wash or very light side-stroked pencil behind the clouds and birds so the warm mandala feels sunlit without losing its fine lines.

At the top of the harbor stair, Vera kept a paper sun wheel under a stone, its spokes cut by hand and its rim waiting for one last shell mark. The July air smelled of salt and hot rope. She carried her grandfather’s brass compass, not for direction—the needle had frozen years ago—but because the tiny lid held the first circle she had ever drawn without tearing the paper.

At low tide she stepped down past green-slick steps, trading a clean hem for mud and a scraped thumb. In a tide crack, where gull cries thinned into echoes, she found no shell. Instead, the compass lid clicked open by itself. Inside, under the old pencil circle, was a pressed scrap of blue paper stamped with a scallop and three words: Make the sun listen.

Back home, Vera cut the scallop from the blue scrap and set it into the empty place. The wheel no longer looked copied from summer; it looked made from it. When the evening light crossed the rim, every hand-cut ray pointed back to the first circle.
