Under the crooked trees, Hollis tucked a plain silver screw into his pocket and rolled his bat-stickered motorcycle toward the moon post. The screw had come from his dad’s old bell, and Hollis wanted to place it there before the mist swallowed the road. Dry leaves skittered, scritch-scratch, under his tires.
At the bend, the moon looked down with no mouth at all. The haunted house windows blinked. A tiny ghost whispered, “Turn the screw.” Hollis’s knees bumped the tank, but he reached up and twisted it into the post. Click! The moon curled into a grin, bright as a pumpkin lantern. Ever since, Halloween moons smile at brave little riders. Can you spot the tiny bats that saw Hollis do it first?
