🎨 How to color it

Try a deep navy helmet, a bright red hockey jersey, silver skate blades, and dark green pine trees behind the rink boards. Use sharp colored pencils for the jersey letters, helmet vents, net squares, and skate laces, then switch to broader strokes for the ice and sky. Add pale blue shadows under the skates and puck so the player looks fast against the crisp winter scene.

Behind the rink shed, where the snow smelled like cold metal and pine needles, Tobin counted his last strip of stick tape. He wanted a lucky charm for the big scrimmage, not the store kind everyone could buy. So he slipped away from the warm bench, skated past the creaky boards, and hunted the practice bin where old pucks went to sulk.

The bin was frozen shut. Tobin chipped it open with his skate guard until his fingers stung and one lace snapped. At the bottom sat a puck split like a black cookie. Inside, hidden where nobody ever peeked, was a shiny bottle cap stamped with a tiny wolf. “Don’t tell the forwards,” he whispered.

Back home, Tobin punched two holes in the cap, braided his broken lace through it, and tied it to his stick knob. It clicked softly when he skated back, not lucky exactly, but his. Next time you spot the puck near his blade, see if you can keep Tobin’s secret: the best charm on the ice came from cold fingers, a cracked puck, and the smell of pine needles.
