🎨 How to color it

Color the player’s jersey bright teal, his shorts sunny orange, the spinning volleyball white with navy and gold panels, and the net posts cool gray. Use sharp colored pencils for the thin floorboards, net squares, shoelaces, and motion lines, then switch to markers for the larger shirt and shorts areas. Try a pale blue shadow under his knee pads and sneakers so his diving bump feels fast against the wooden court.

By the time the pop-up court unfolded in the old train depot, Nico had already tied three cans, two bottle caps, and a bent cake pan to a wooden frame. He wanted his volleyball bump to make the frame ring exactly once. Thunk went the ball, clatter went the cans, and the dusty rafters smelled like warm pine and machine oil.

More players arrived, their sneakers squeaking across the taped floor. Nico adjusted knots, added a cardboard tunnel, and slapped silver tape around the cake pan until it shone. Each pass sent a new sound jumping loose: ping, bong, tikka-tak! “I made a sky-drum,” he said, grinning as his fingers stuck to the tape.

Then a woman rolled in a wagon full of tiny bells, gourd shakers, and drumheads painted like suns. “That frame is calling my cart,” she laughed. She was a traveling percussion maker, and she clipped one copper bell to Nico’s top corner.

Now every bump lifted music into the depot, and every handmade piece had its own proud voice. When you spot the ball flying from clasped hands, can you hear the sky-drum answer—ping, bong, tikka-tak?
