High above the stone ravine, Orin tapped one claw on the ledge and counted the pinecones below: one, two, three. His challenge was simple—count every cone on the crooked pine branch before the warm stripe of sun left the cliff. Resin smelled sharp and sweet, and the wind made the needles whisper like tiny brushes.
Then a fourth cone rolled from a crack where no branch grew. Orin leaned out, curious as a spark. He stepped off his safe ledge and glided after it, past cold rock faces and a shadowy shelf where water ticked, ticked, ticked. A gust snatched one soft feather from his wing, but he kept following.
The cone stopped beside a hidden pine seedling, green as a secret. “So that’s where you came from,” Orin murmured. He carried the cone back, not to finish his count, but to tuck it near the seedling’s roots. If you spot the pinecones under his landing place, which one do you think sent Orin chasing past one, two, three?
