Behind the windy spruce line, Vera pressed her best striped tail feather under one talon and whispered, “Trade Trail begins now.” The rules were secret, which made them excellent: leave something soft, follow whatever the mountain gives back, and return before the shadow of Hawktooth Peak touched the cone pile. She wanted a surprise big enough to make her little brothers stop squabbling over the same sun-warmed rock.
First, she tucked the feather beside a pinecone branch sticky with sap. The branch scratched her foot, and the sap glued two toes together—small price, but don’t laugh; she nearly hopped into a bush. A nutcracker bird clicked from the pines and dropped a blue-gray pebble where the feather had been. Vera carried it past cold stone that smelled like rain and found a hollow log humming with hidden bees. Inside lay nothing golden, nothing fancy—only a handful of spruce seeds rattling like tiny bells.
Vera came back with sap on her claws, a pebble in her beak, and seeds for everyone to toss into the updraft. They spun and glittered above the cone pile, and her brothers whooped so loudly even the peaks seemed to lean closer. If you spot the loose feather and the pinecone branch, keep the secret: that is where Trade Trail begins now.
