🎨 How to color it

Color the bald eagle with a white head and tail, deep brown wings and body, a golden-yellow beak and talons, slate-gray mountains, and a blue-green river. Use sharp colored pencils for the layered wing feathers, pulling each stroke from the feather base toward the pointed tips to keep the flight lines crisp. Try fading the sky from pale peach near the mountain tops to clear blue above the eagle’s lifted wing.

The story behind this coloring page

Kestrel’s Ridge Run — Every morning, Kestrel chased the silver river through the alpine valley, counting wingbeats from the crooked bend to the tallest black ridge. Read the full story →

Every morning, Kestrel chased the silver river through the alpine valley, counting wingbeats from the crooked bend to the tallest black ridge. She had set herself a challenge: reach the ridge before the sun touched the snowcap. The cold air smelled like pine sap and stone dust, and her feathers hissed as she cut through it. One morning, a hard canyon wind slammed upward from the cliffs and shoved her off her usual path.

Because of that, Kestrel shot over a row of peaks she had only seen from far below, where the world looked folded and wild. Because of that, she spotted a hidden draft curling above the river, bright with mist, and tucked one wing to catch it. “There you are,” she cried, as the wind lifted her higher than her old route ever had.

At last she swept above the black ridge just as sunlight flashed across it, not beating the valley but moving with it. The river, the peaks, the rushing air—everything fit beneath her wings. If you follow the winding water back through the mountains, can you find the path Kestrel made when she chased the silver river?
