Before the gulls called, Tavi nosed through the cool dawn strait, chasing the first warm stripe of sun. He wanted to feel it on his back before any other dolphin did. The water tasted silvery and cold, and every wave whispered, Not yet, not yet. So Tavi left the safe sleeping cove and swam toward the dark line where the sky touched the sea.
Halfway there, a cracked little voice floated up. “Slow, young splash.” An old sea turtle rocked below a mat of drifting leaves, one flipper tangled in a loop of sea grass. Tavi circled once, looking at the paling sky, then ducked down. The grass scratched his beak, and one bright minute of sunrise slipped away while he tugged and tugged until the turtle was free.
They rose together just as the sun lifted whole and round, spilling gold across clouds, birds, palms, and waves. Tavi had missed the first stripe, but the turtle showed him how the second stripe warmed longer if you waited beneath it. When Tavi finally leaped, the sea clapped softly around his tail, and if you follow the splash, you may spot the warm stripe he brought back to the cove.
