🎨 How to color it

Color the treasure chest warm chestnut brown with golden coins, the leaning palm tree bright green and tan, and the rolling waves turquoise under pale blue clouds. Use sharp colored pencils for the dotted trail, tiny shells, coin circles, and map markings, then switch to broader strokes for the sand and sky. Try making each X on the trail a different sunset color, as if the beach is slowly revealing its secret.

From her hammock in the sail shade, Zadie heard a soft clink-clink under the noon hush and tucked her shell-listening cup into her sash. She wanted one clear sea sound for the ship’s bedtime jar, not gull squawks or rope creaks, so she stepped onto the hot beach where the air smelled of salt and sun-warmed grass. A dotted trail curved across the sand, but each foamy wave reached out and blurred it before she could hurry.

Near the third black X, a hermit crab in a bottle-cap helmet clicked his claws. “Wait for the water to breathe out,” he said. Zadie sat beside him, paying with time while the tide tugged and sighed, tugged and sighed. Sand cooled under her heels. Shells glittered. At last the sea slipped back, leaving the dotted path whole and shining toward a small chest half-buried by beach grass.

Inside was no ruby, only a smooth silver shell that sang clink-clink when Zadie held it to her ear. She carried it back for the bedtime jar, softer-footed than before. Next time you trace the dotted path, can you hear the tide breathe out from her sail-shade hammock?
