The coat button clicked under Garrick’s thumb every time the ship turned north. Click, click—gone. It had belonged to his first captain, a plain brass thing no bigger than a berry, and Garrick would not steer into the fog-bank without it. He tied the wheel, slipped from the warm deck boards, and followed a faint ticking below, past damp rope that smelled of salt and tar.
In the hold, the button lay wedged beneath a loose plank, but freeing it cost him his best red scarf, torn clean on a splinter. Under the plank waited not treasure, but a scratched message: HOME IS WHERE THE WHEEL LISTENS. When he pressed the button back onto his coat, the ticking matched the creak of the helm above.
Garrick returned to the wind, scarf shorter, shoulders lighter. The fog opened around a ship he had nearly missed, sailing safely across their path. He put both hands on the wheel and felt the deck answer under his boots. If you check the round mark on his hat, you might guess why the little click sounded like home.
