The chart snapped and fluttered in the sea wind as Jory spread it across the deck, pinning one corner with a shell and another with his elbow. He wanted to carry the crew’s route to the captain before the noon bell, so he traced the dotted path past inked cliffs, pine-topped ridges, and a round lagoon that smelled, somehow, of salt and warm coconuts. The ship leaned happily over a blue-green swell. Ropes hummed. Gulls yelled like they had opinions.
The dots curved and looped, never hurrying, and Jory followed them with a finger stained black from map ink. “Steady now,” he whispered, though the deck bounced beneath his knees. At the big X, he paused, grinning, because every pirate knew an X meant something worth reaching. But the captain only laughed softly and tapped the two compass roses. Their petals were not petals at all. They were tiny arrows, folded into flowers.
When Jory turned the chart upside down, the roses pointed to each other, and a pale line appeared where the paper had been warmed by the sun. The real surprise had been hiding inside north, south, east, and west: a second path that joined the first at the lagoon. Jory felt the deck, the wind, and the map all agree beneath him. Next time you see those twin compass roses, check their flower-arrows—Jory may already be exactly where he belongs.
