🎨 How to color it

Color the duckling butter yellow, the broken eggshells pale cream, the grass spring green, and the two small daisies sunny white with golden centers. Use chunky crayons or broad marker strokes on the duckling’s round body, then switch to the tip for the zigzag shell cracks and skinny grass blades. Try making the sun a warm orange-yellow so it feels like the duckling’s smile is lighting up the whole nest.

Inside the warm shell, Kip tapped: tik, tik, tum. He had invented Shell-Hello, a game for saying hi before anyone could see him. Outside, grass whispered in the sun, and daisies smelled sweet and dusty. Kip wanted every tap to find the right place to answer from.

He tapped high. A cloud drifted by. He tapped low. A beetle bumped the shell with a tiny clack. Then Kip gave one happy wiggle, and crack-crack-crackle! The shell opened around him like a little white flower. “Hello, place,” Kip peeped.

The broken pieces did not roll away. They tucked into the grass, making tiny cups for dew, beetles, and daisy seeds.
