Every afternoon, Zuzu sorted eucalyptus leaves into three piles: crunchy, chewy, and “absolutely suspicious.” The suspicious pile went in a fork of the tree where nobody but Zuzu bothered to look, because it smelled like pepper, rainwater, and old socks.
Until one day, the pile sneezed. Because of that, a kangaroo named Jib hopped backward into a grass tuft, and a wombat named Grunk sat down so hard a pebble popped. Because of THAT, Zuzu poked the leaves with one claw and uncovered a tiny blue bush-cricket wearing a crown made of bark crumbs. “I am King Skritch, inspector of snacks,” it squeaked, and everyone laughed until the leaves shook.
Finally, Zuzu made the suspicious fork the official clubhouse for odd guests, crumb kings, and anyone who liked peppery lunches. If you can spot the leafy bunch in Zuzu’s paws, you may be looking at tomorrow’s royal snack, still smelling of pepper, rainwater, and old socks.
