🎨 How to color it

Color the duck soft yellow with an orange bill, the lily pads fresh green, the cattails warm brown, and the sun golden yellow. Use chunky crayons or broad marker strokes for the duck’s wide body and the big lily pads, then add the thin water ripples with a light blue pencil. Try making the pond darker blue near the duck and paler blue around the little flower, as if the water is holding sunlight.

The story behind this coloring page

Pip’s Quiet Pond Game — Every day, Pip paddled between the cattails, counting plip, plip, plip with his feet. Read the full story →

Every day, Pip paddled between the cattails, counting plip, plip, plip with his feet. He wanted to make a game no one had ever played, so he nudged lily pads into secret paths and named each ripple after the warm sun on his bill.

Until one day, the smallest water bugs came drifting in the heat, too tired to cross the open pond. Because of that, Pip changed his game: three lily pads became resting spots. Because of that, the bugs crossed safely, and no one saw Pip smile under his feathers. “Your turn,” he whispered to the water. Next time you spot the lily pads, can you guess which ones were part of Pip’s quiet game of plip, plip, plip?
