🎨 How to color it

Try barn-red boards, a silver-gray silo, golden corn rows, and deep orange pumpkins resting on olive and russet leaves. Use sharp colored pencils for the barn siding, silo panels, fence rails, and corn stalks, then switch to lighter pressure for the wide sky and rolling hills. Add a sunset glow behind the round sun and let a few pumpkin ribs fade from yellow-orange to burnt orange.

Every evening, when the round sun slid toward the cloud bank, Quentin raced the farm shadows. He had just invented Silo Shadow Sprint: start at the fence post, tag the barn door, dash past the pumpkin pile, and beat the silo’s long stripe before it touched the path. Dry grass hissed under his sneakers, and the cornfield rattled like a crowd shaking paper tickets.

Until one day, the silo shadow bent the wrong way. Because of that, Quentin chased it behind the barn instead of finishing the race, and found hoofprints stamped in the dust where no cow should have wandered. Because of that, he followed the prints past the wheelbarrow, past the pumpkin leaves prickling his ankles, until the barn cats yowled from the hayloft window. “Not the shortcut,” Quentin whispered, but curiosity had already grabbed his sleeve.

Finally, the crooked shadow stopped at a loose board under the open barn door. Quentin tugged, and out rolled the missing calf bell, clanging bright as a dinner triangle. The calves lifted their heads in the far field, and the tractor driver waved his cap. Next time you study the barnyard, see if you can trace Quentin’s wild course from the fence post to the pumpkin pile before the silo’s long stripe reaches the path.
