Every recess, Bram rubbed the tiny mud smudge on his football three times and whispered, “Boot, scoot, don’t bonk.” It smelled like wet grass and old socks, and he would not let anyone wipe it off.
Until one day, Coach Della sprayed the ball clean by mistake. Because of that, Bram grabbed a maple leaf and stuck it where the smudge had been. Because of THAT, his kick went whomp, and the leaf flew up with a hundred crunchy cousins, spinning over the goalpost like popcorn.
