Beside the piney river, Pip patted the orange raft: thump, thump, thump. He wanted every paddle straight and every life jacket buckled before the practice whistle. The water made swishy ribbons around the rocks, and the wet rubber smelled like rain boots.
He set one paddle across the raft and set the other beside it. Then the left life jacket wiggled. Pip froze. A tiny green frog popped out from under the straps and gave one proud ribbit, as if he had inspected the whole boat.
“You’re on the crew?” Pip laughed. The frog blinked and sat exactly where a captain would sit. Pip tucked the jacket beside him, not on him, and pushed the raft a gentle inch from shore. If you spot the bumpiest life jacket next time, keep watch for the river’s smallest rescue captain.
