🎨 How to color it

Color the baker’s hat bright white, the striped bakery awning buttery yellow and cherry red, the bird fountain pale blue, and the flower pots terracotta. Use sharp colored pencils for the arched windows, tiny flower petals, and bread-shaped shop sign, then switch to markers for the broad coats and sidewalks. Try making the fountain water a light-to-dark blue ring so the small bird looks as if it has just hopped into the sparkle.

The story behind this coloring page

Behind the warm bakery window, where cinnamon stuck to the air, Pip invented a game called Pass-It-On-Wave. The rule was secret: if you had an extra bun, you waved with your left hand at someone who looked chilly or tired, then tucked the bun where they would find it. No cheering. No pointing. Nobody watching, if you could help it.

Pip tested it on Mr. Orlo, whose glasses were foggy from the fountain mist. A currant bun waited on the rim beside the stone bird. Pip waved. Mr. Orlo found it, blinked, and laughed so softly it sounded like crumbs in a paper bag. Then he waved to Bea, who had been sharing her scarf with her little dog, and left her a seed roll. Bea waved toward the bakery door, where Pip’s pockets were empty.

That was when the stone bird gave one tiny drip-drip-plink, as if it had been keeping the secret too. Ever since, people in Bakery Square wave before they give, so kindness can travel without wearing anyone’s name; next time you see the bird on the fountain, I dare you to decide where the first secret bun was hidden.
