Under the quilt in her burrow, Wren pressed dough with a bottle cap and whispered her challenge: one flower cookie, made by her own paws, for the pond picnic. The dough smelled like honey and lemon peel, but the flour tin gave only a dusty cough. Wren tied on her smallest apron, took three brave breaths, and stepped out toward the hill mill while blossom petals tapped her nose like cool pink rain.
The path squished from last night’s drizzle. At the mill, the door stuck, and Wren had to push until her quills prickled and her paws turned white with flour. On the way back, a gust flipped her apron pocket, and half the flour puffed into the grass. “Oh, crumbs,” she said softly. So she mixed what remained with crushed oats from her snack pouch, shaping one bumpy flower and one tiny crumb-star from the scraps.
By the pond, Finch the bunny and Nori the squirrel were already unpacking juice and muffins while ducks made sleepy circles in the water. Wren set down her wobbly cookie, warm and oat-speckled, and waited. Finch broke the crumb-star into three little points. It tasted nutty, sweet, and entirely Wren’s. If you spot the small flower treat on the blanket, you’ll know where the challenge ended: under the quilt, it had only been dough.
