Under the tall studio window, Ivo rolled blue and white together on his wooden palette until the paint smelled cool, like rain on stone. He wanted one color no paint jar could name, a sky he had made with his own paws. The potted leaves tapped the sill in a small breeze, and the blank canvas waited on its easel with bright, patient silence.
A gray kitten padded in, carrying a brush almost as tall as her tail. “May I add one swish?” she asked. Ivo nodded. She touched the brush to his new blue, then to a puddle of yellow, and her whiskers caught a stripe of sunlight. Their strokes crossed and crossed again, soft as thread over cloth.
Then Ivo noticed the same crisscross pattern sliding across the canvas without any brush at all—the window frame, the leaves, and the afternoon light were painting too. His hand-mixed sky had invited the whole room in. He stood a little taller in his apron, proud of the color on his paws, and if you peek at the canvas, you might find the cool rain-on-stone blue still waiting under the tall studio window.
