Every evening, Orla raced the closing bells through the Hall of Relics, dusting glass cases before the guards locked the bronze doors. She always paused by the storm-crown, where pearls clicked softly in the draft and the velvet cushion smelled of cedar and old rain. Until one day, a striped weasel popped from under the tassels and snapped, “You’re late.”
Because of that, Orla dropped her feather duster, and the crown gave a tiny thunderclap. Because of that, every jewel on it flashed a different hallway onto the ceiling: frozen stairs, a silver bridge, a room full of maps that breathed. The weasel bounded up the cushion rope and said the crown would choose a door only if someone asked the right question.
Orla’s curiosity took off faster than her feet. “Where did the rain go?” she shouted. Finally, the center jewel opened a blue path beneath the cases, and the weasel dived in first. Orla followed the smell of wet stone and cedar, while behind her the pearls clicked softly in the draft—can you spot the tassel where the weasel first appeared?
