Between the tick-tock waves, Della invented a game called Cap the Crest. The rule was secret and simple: touch the lighthouse bell with one tentacle, then race back before a wave could blink. Salt fizzed on her cheeks, and the bell rope looked terribly high above the rocks. “Just one tap,” she whispered, though her arms curled close as shoelaces.
The first swell rose beside her, smooth and dark, with no brave face at all. Della gulped, stretched one trembling tentacle, and flicked the bell—ding! The sound snapped silver through the air. Startled, the swell tossed its top into a foamy white cap, as if it had joined her game.
