🎨 How to color it

Color the thatched roof honey gold, the cottage door sage green, the picket fence soft white, and the tall sunflowers bright yellow with cocoa centers. Use sharp colored pencils for the rose vines, foxglove bells, fence slats, and stepping stones so the small vintage details stay crisp. Try a sunrise fade behind the rolling hills, with pale peach near the cottage chimney melting into sky blue above the clouds.

Before the hill shadows slid off the thatch, Briony tucked a bean pod behind one ear and began her morning challenge: greet every open bloom before the garden gate clicked twice. “Good morning, rose. Good morning, foxglove. Good morning, sunflower with your sleepy brown eye.” Dew cooled her ankles, bees made a low golden burr, and the stone path held last night’s chill under her bare feet.

She moved carefully, because the cottage garden liked small voices. The roses answered with peppery sweetness. The tall flower spires gave off a green, rainy smell. Beyond the fence, the lane curved away between pale fields, and the chimney breathed one thin ribbon into the blue. Briony reached the final daisy just as the gate gave its first wooden click.

Then the second click did not come. Instead, the gate swung wider, and Briony saw tiny chalk marks on the inside rail: one for each morning she had whispered hello. The gate had set its own challenge—to save every greeting until there were enough to share with the road. A warm gust carried rose, grass, and sunflower dust down the lane, and Briony laughed so softly the clouds seemed to lean closer. If you follow the stepping stones back to the open gate, you may find where the morning keeps count.
