🎨 How to color it

Color the pineapple rind golden yellow with olive-green points, the tall crown bright leafy green, the ocean turquoise, and the palm fronds deep emerald. Use a sharp colored pencil for the many small rind diamonds, then switch to broader side-strokes for the wavy water and open sand. Try shading every other pineapple scale a little darker so the fruit looks bumpy and sun-warmed.

Behind the shuttered juice stand, Zora the pineapple listened for the soft clack of shells in the surf. She wanted one clear sea-whisper for her hollow crown, the kind the gulls said arrived only after everyone quit waiting. The sand was cool and gritty under her round base as she wobbled from the straw mat, past sleeping crabs and a bucket that smelled of salt and lime.

The tide crept out finger by finger. Zora waited. A hermit crab clicked, “You’ll dry out before the sea talks.” Still, she stayed, paying with one green crown-tip that snapped in the wind. At last, a thin wave sighed away and left a flat, ordinary-looking shell tucked beneath her lowest rind scales, where nobody ever checked. Inside was not a voice, but three black seeds and a tiny scratch-map of the cove.

Zora rolled home slowly, carrying the secret in her crown. By morning, she had planted the seeds beside the stand, where patient leaves could listen for tides of their own. If you spot the shell-shaped spaces between her bumpy scales, keep it quiet—some secrets wait best in plain sight.
