Under the warm lamps of the sprinkle studio, Quilla tapped her dented spoon three times: tink, tink, tonk. She kept it in her apron because its bowl had a smudge shaped like a question mark. Tonight she wanted to follow that smudge wherever it pointed, even if it only led to the frosting bucket again. Sweet vanilla air puffed from the piping bags as she made flowers, leaves, curls, and exactly one curly thing that looked like a snail wearing a hat.
The smudge seemed to point left. Quilla nudged a star sprinkle left. Then a heart. Then a whole trail of dots. “Aha,” she whispered, which was what she said whenever she had no idea. The cookie under her hands began to look less like dessert and more like a garden trying to send secret mail. Every new swirl made the spoon shine brighter, as if it were enjoying the joke.
Then Quilla held the spoon over the cookie and saw the twist: the dent was not a question mark at all. In the spoon’s reflection, the flowers, leaves, and scattered sprinkles formed a tiny laughing face with frosting eyebrows. The studio giggled in sugar-crisp silence. If you ever spot that dented spoon beside the sprinkles, tilt your head and listen for three taps: tink, tink, tonk.
