🎨 How to color it

Make car 77 cherry red, car 42 electric blue, the grandstand flags sunny yellow, and the scoreboard panels deep green. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny tire lettering, fence mesh, crowd dots, and dashboard details, then switch to markers for the wide track and car bodies. Try a pale lavender shadow under both cars so the white START letters still pop against the pavement.

All morning, Quin held car 77 still on the start stripe, listening for the clean click of the green light. The forest circuit smelled like warm rubber and pine sap, and every flag above the grandstand snapped in the quick wind. Beside him, car 42 hummed softly, ready but unhurried. The scoreboard blinked LAP 14, P1 77, P2 42, as if it were holding its breath too.

The track curved away silver and smooth, past tire walls and a fence that ticked in the breeze. Quin counted the tiny sounds: crew radios, crowd shoes on metal steps, his own engine—brum, brum, brum—steady as a drum. “Not yet,” he whispered, and kept his wheels perfectly straight.

Then a paper airplane swooped from the top row, dipped between the flags, and landed on Quin’s windshield. It carried a note from the youngest scoreboard helper: PLEASE WAIT—GRANDMA IS STILL CLIMBING THE STAIRS. Quin laughed so hard his mirrors shook. When the helper’s grandma reached her seat and waved both hands, the light turned green, car 42 surged with him, and the whole place roared. Next time you see those two cars paused together, check the grandstand—someone may be waving thanks for the lap that waited.
