🎨 How to color it

Color the monkey’s fur cocoa brown, the pumpkin costume bright orange, the leaf cap golden yellow, and the tiny bat smoky purple. Use sharp colored pencils for the jack-o'-lantern faces and twig lines, then switch to broader strokes for the round pumpkin sections and large fallen leaves. Try making the costume glow with yellow-orange centers and darker orange edges, as if a secret Halloween lantern is shining inside.

Under the tickly maple moon, Dax marched through Maple Hollow with a plain tin pail bumping his knee—clonk, clonk, clonk. He had polished it all afternoon with fern fuzz because he wanted it to sound just right for the Leaf-Mask Parade. Around him, dry leaves skittered like paper mice, and his pumpkin suit smelled faintly of garden dirt and cinnamon bark.

He tapped the pail with three twigs. Clonk-clonk-clonk became plink-plonk-PONK. A bat squeaked along, then another. Dax tried a fancy spin, slipped on a leaf, and accidentally bonked the pail against his costume.

“Who laughed?” he whispered.

The pail’s carved grin lit from inside—not with fire, but with tiny orange chuckles. Every clonk Dax had saved inside it spilled out: his hiccup laugh, the bat’s squeak-laugh, even the maple leaves’ scratchy ha-ha. Soon the whole hollow was giggling so hard the bare branches wiggled like fingers. Dax scooped up more laughter and marched on, joy too big for one monkey to carry; if you spot his little pail, you may hear clonk, clonk, clonk.
