🎨 How to color it

Color the snow monkey’s fur warm tawny brown, the hot spring pale turquoise, the rocks soft gray, and the pine needles deep forest green. Use sharp colored pencils for the monkey’s face lines and fur tufts, then switch to gentle side-strokes for the snowy hills and steam curls. Try a cool blue shadow around the white snowflakes so the warm monkey and misty water feel extra cozy.

Past the pine that clicked with frost, Dessa tucked her numb fingers under her arms and watched the elders soak in the upper pools. She wanted one flat warm stone to carry back to her sleeping hollow before moonrise. The nearest stones were taken, so she stepped beyond the cozy ledge, over crunchy snow and slick black rock, toward the lower spring where the steam rose in twisty, secret shapes.

Her price was a cold splash up to her elbows. “Brr—show me something good,” she whispered. In the quietest pool, where nobody bothered because it barely bubbled, her hand brushed a stone with a notch shaped like a tiny paw. When she lifted it, a silver thread of heat curled out, and a hidden vent began to purr under the water.

Dessa did not carry the stone away. She set it back sideways, and the lower spring warmed wide enough for every chilly paw in the troop. If you spot the twistiest steam curl, keep watching; it may still be pointing past the pine that clicked with frost.
