🎨 How to color it

Give the monkey warm golden-brown fur, the fruit slice a juicy coral pink with a pale green rind, and the large split leaves deep emerald and lime green. Use sharp colored pencils for the fine fur strokes on the face, arms, and curled tail, then switch to smoother fills on the broad leaves. Try a cool blue-green shadow behind the branches so the pink fruit glows like a tiny secret.

Under the mist orchard, a young monkey named Rafi rubbed his thumb along a half-moon rind he had scraped smooth with a river stone. He wanted to make a cup that would hold the tiny silver seeds from the night-blooming cloudfruit. The old seeds always slipped through paws and vanished in the moss. His rind cup was not much to look at, but it smelled sweet and sharp, and every notch inside it was his own work.

At moonrise, the cloudfruit opened with a soft pop-pop-pop. Rafi caught three seeds, then six. The cup began to tremble. A thin crack crept across the rind like lightning. From inside came a whisper: “Hold me curved.” Rafi pressed both hands around the cup, warm fur against cool rind, and shaped it tighter. The crack stopped. The seeds hummed, making the cup hard as shell.

By morning, every cloudfruit rind curled into a little bowl when it was emptied, ready to cradle seeds instead of spilling them. Ever since, monkeys in the mist orchard save the curved rinds for planting time. Next time you spot that careful fruit cup, notice the small hands around it and remember the half-moon Rafi scraped smooth with a river stone.
