The party room smelled like sugar icing and shiny rubber balloons. Jax sat by the striped present, tapping one toe, waiting for the first pop. “Any minute now,” he whispered, grinning at the floating bunch above him.
The ribbons wiggled. The candle flickered. Still, no balloon popped. Jax counted the sprinkles on the cupcake, then counted the stars hanging over the table. When he finally leaned close to the gift bow, it made a tiny crinkle-crinkle sound.
Out slid a paper crumb, no bigger than a sprinkle. It said, WAIT FOR THE CUPCAKE. Jax blinked. Then the candle gave a happy puff, and the frosting lifted like a little door. Inside was one teeny party horn. Pweee! Next time you spot Jax waving by the cupcake, see if he looks like he waited for that pop.
