High in the rainwood boughs, where wet bark smelled like pepper and moss, Oren pressed both hands around his mouth. He had set himself a small challenge: make an echo with nothing but things he had shaped himself. All morning he had twisted a fallen vine into a loop, smoothed a hollow twig with a pebble, and tucked three broad leaves above his perch like a green roof. “One clear call,” he whispered, feeling the scratchy vine fibers on his fingers.
He drew in the cool, misty air and sent out a long, ringing OOO-aaa! The sound slipped past the leaves, brushed the twig, and came back rounder than before. Oren’s eyes widened. He called again, softer. This time the answer fluttered with a tiny wooden trill, as if the branch had learned to sing through its own ribs.
Then the upper vine trembled. A beetle no bigger than a seed stepped from the hollow twig, bowing with two shining antennae. Oren had not made one echo; he had made a doorway for another musician. He touched the vine loop with proud, careful fingers, and together they filled the pepper-moss air with one clear call—can you find where that call is bursting from?
