Every morning, Kiki crept to the fallen log and touched it with one fingertip. Tap? Too loud! He wanted to drum a real wake-up beat, but the forest smelled damp and enormous, and even the ferns seemed to listen.
Until one day, a butterfly flapped down and sneezed pollen right on the log. Piff! Because of that, Kiki jumped and bonked the wood with both hands—bom-bom! Because of THAT, the butterfly wiggled so hard it made a leafy, giggly rustle. “Do it again!” it squeaked.
Kiki swallowed, then tapped: bom, bippa, bom. The butterfly danced, the ferns shook, and Kiki laughed at his own noisy paws. Next time you see his curled tail by the log, can you hear the tiny bom-bom he was brave enough to start?
