From the quiet clearing came a mmm-mmm sound, soft as a bee in a blanket. Lulo padded through cool grass because he wanted to know what was singing before the moon climbed over the palms. Under a droopy fern sat a mango bigger than his belly, warm and sweet-smelling, with two green leaves on its stem. When he hugged it, the humming stopped. A tiny night bee crawled out and yawned. “Please don’t roll my house,” she whispered.
Lulo held very still. The bee tucked her dusty feet beneath the two leaves and began to hum again, and the mango hummed with her, round and sleepy. Lulo carried it to a hollow in the soft moss, where no feet would bump it. By morning, the bee had flown away, but the leaves stayed curled close, like little ears for listening. Ever since, mangoes keep leaves on their stems, in case a small hum needs a home. If you spot those two leaves, can you hear the mmm-mmm sound from the quiet clearing?
