🎨 How to color it

Color the monkey honey brown, the coconut shells warm tan with creamy white centers, the palm leaves bright green, and the water pale blue. The monkey’s body and big coconuts have roomy shapes, so chunky crayons or broad marker strokes will work well before adding smaller leaf lines. Try making the two coconut halves slightly different shades of tan, as if one just rolled out of the sun and the other sat in cool shade.

Under the leaning palms, Pippa rolled a coconut between her feet and whispered, “One tap, then two.” She wanted to make the first drumbeat for the morning canoe race, so she carried the coconut to the warm sand where the sea went shhh-shhh. Tap! The shell split neatly into two bowls, and Pippa’s heart jumped like a grasshopper. She sat very still, then grinned and lifted both halves.

The bowls did not boom. They sloshed. Inside one white cup, tucked where nobody thought to look, was a tiny pearl shining like moonlight in milk. Pippa gave a brave little tap on the empty half, and the pearl answered with a soft plink. Soon her coconut drum played tap-plink, tap-plink, while palm leaves clapped overhead. If you peek at her hands, can you guess which half is hiding the sea’s secret song?
