Behind the ring forge, where hot metal smelled faintly of rain on stone, Selka kept her mother’s brass thimble hidden in her fist. It looked like nothing—a dented cap, pricked all over—but she pressed it into the soft gold strip again and again, making dots no machine could place quite straight. The council wanted smooth bands, quick bands, proper bands. Selka wanted one orbit that showed the hand that made it.
When the furnace sighed blue, she bent the strip around the sleeping planet and stitched its edges with tiny triangles, leaves, and flower-marks, whispering, “Hold still; this part is ours.” The thimble left its last bright circle just as the band clicked shut. Ever since, ringed planets keep their handmade belts tilted proudly, so anyone who knows the secret can see the small dents of the maker’s hand.
