Every night, Oona counted the same seven bubbles, tucked her toes under the moonleaf, and listened to the weed forest hush-shush in the dark. She wanted to drift as far as the pale crescent, just once, but the water beyond her leaf felt too wide and cool against her gills.
Until one night, the seventh bubble did not rise. It tapped the underside of her bed: tick, tick, tick. Because of that, Oona pressed her cheek to the leaf and heard a tiny chime. Because of that, she dared to uncurl the leaf’s silver edge with one paw.
Inside, where nobody had ever looked, lay a pocket of little star-seeds, warm as lantern sand. “I can carry one,” Oona whispered. She tucked the smallest seed beneath her chin, pushed into the open water, and watched the weeds shine a path ahead. If you find the curled leaf, can you spot the brave little glow that began after seven bubbles?
