🎨 How to color it

Color the axolotl coral pink with lavender feathery gills, the three castle towers soft sandstone gray, and the round bubbles pale aqua. Use sharp colored pencils for the gill fronds, brick marks, and leaf veins, then switch to broader strokes for the pebble bed and tower walls. Try shading the castle doorway in deep blue so it feels like a mysterious tunnel behind the smiling axolotl.

Under the old fountain, Nori pressed both feet into the cool pebble floor and counted bubbles: big, small, small, big. The pattern popped from the dark doorway of the sunken castle every time the water clock chimed. Nori wanted to answer it, so she tapped the stones with her tail—tap, tap, swish!—and felt brave enough to scoot closer than she ever had before.

The castle did not open with a groan. It hiccuped. A bubble the size of a plum rolled out, and inside it stood a beetle in a silver diving bell, waving a spoon like a flag. “Wrong rhythm,” he called, his voice tiny and fizzy. “It’s a dinner bell!”

Nori laughed so hard her gills shivered. She tapped big, small, small, big again, and the doorway filled with warm gold light and the smell of peppery watercress soup. The beetle bowed, Nori paddled in, and the bubbles rose like lanterns over the old fountain; next time you spot the castle door, can you hear tap, tap, swish?
