Under a roof of fern shadows, Suri pressed her belly to the cool sand and sniffed for mintroot. Its clean, peppery smell usually drifted from the spring channel, perfect for soothing Aunt Lumo’s scratchy gills, but the scent had faded to almost nothing. So Suri slipped out from her snug hollow and paddled where the water ran faster, past tickly weed tips and stones that hummed under the current.
A sharp pebble nicked one soft toe. Suri tucked it close, but kept going until she reached a flat gray stone nobody ever nibbled, because it tasted like rain. Beneath it, in a pocket of chilly silt, glimmered silver seeds, round as bubbles and smelling strongly of mintroot. “Oh,” Suri whispered, and joy swelled so big she had to carry it home in both careful hands.
By dusk, the seeds were tucked into every sandy crack near the hollow. Aunt Lumo breathed easier, tiny fish came to sniff, and even the stones seemed fresh and bright. If you spot Suri in the spring channel, can you tell which plain rock kept the surprise safe?
